On Sunday evening we were taken into Melbourne for a meal in a restaurant – this was Maddie & Dan’s Christmas present to us and we had no idea where we were going, all we knew was we had to dress smartly and be ready by 7.45pm.
After parking the car we walked towards the Casino but turned away from it and joined some other people at the start point for The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. What a surprise we did not even know it existed!
The company was formed in 1981 and the trams were rebuilt and furnished with all their required permits and licences starting operations in 1983. The train of three trams drive around the city over 3 hours whilst customers enjoy a five course meal. There is not a varied menu but read on.
Having entered the tram we were greeted on board by Anthony and served champagne with the appetisers of cream, liver and cognac pate and roasted red capsicum dip served with assorted crisp bread.
The entrées were a choice of grilled kangaroo loin or smoked salmon and avocado mouse. We tried the kangaroo which has a flavour similar to venison and was very tasty. Maddie had the salmon and really enjoyed it.
All the time this was going on the champagne was repeatedly topped up plus there was a choice of red or white wine which started flowing just as the entrées arrived.
For the main course there was a choice of chargrilled breast of chicken or prime eye fillet of beef resting on a potato and herb rosti, accompanied by seasonal vegetables (green beans and red pepper), onion marmalade and rich beef jus. All four of us had the beef – and it was totally divine.
The wine kept flowing!
We then had a selection of Australian cheese and water crackers and finally a choice of warm sticky date pudding topped with butterscotch sauce and cream or white chocolate and passionfruit mousse with praline and vanilla raspberry syrup. The boys both had the second choice whilst Maddie and Chris were served with the gluten free dessert, which was fabulous.
The whole experience was an unforgettable and magical evening. Thank you very much Maddie & Dan.
